Today shaped by choices, and the things we enjoy

Choice is very important in living one’s life. There is even a saying that “a single decision can determine one’s destiny.” Many people have experienced how one moment can lead to joy for some and regret for others. And these choices, accumulated over time, have created the things we now take for granted. 

For example, women’s rights and the right to vote. To promote women’s rights and bring about changes in social awareness, women activists in Korea, such as Kim Maria, made the choice to speak out despite social constraints and oppression. Numerous women whose names were not recorded in history also made the same choice, and those choices accumulated and led to the rights whose benefits we now enjoy. 

We need to remember what choices they made, and what results those choices brought about. The recent situation involving the "Everytime" app is no different. 

The Everytime app is a platform where students from the same university can communicate freely and anonymously. Opinions on the rules of the Everytime bulletin board were sharply divided. Various perspectives existed regarding rules such as the prohibition of corsets, the prohibition of displaying heterosexual relationships, and the prohibition of an e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-n that uses ㅠㅠ on text. 

Some people might simply think, “There must be a reason for this,” and move on, while others might think, “What’s wrong with expressing myself as I want?” These views are not necessarily wrong.

However, there is a need to take one step further. We should consider why these rules were created, and in what circumstances and through what choices they came together to reach these conclusions. 

At first, I couldn’t easily relate to these rules either. However, as I came to understand the background and the situation at the time, I began to think that those choices might have been the best possible ones. The environment in which we can now engage in relatively healthy questions and discussions on Everytime may also be the result of those accumulated choices. 

In the end, a person’s life is also formed by the accumulation of countless choices. The same applies to the society we live in. The systems and rules that exist today are also the result of accumulated deliberation and choices made by others. 

Before complaining, we need to consider the background in which such systems and rules were created. We should leave open the possibility that those choices may have been the best at the time. And we should not forget that we now enjoy the benefits of those choices.

인생을 살아가는 데 있어 선택은 아주 중요하다. “선택 한번으로 인생이 좌우된다”는 말이 있을 정도다.

한번의 선택으로 희비가 갈려 누군가는 기뻐하고 또 다른 누군가는 후회한 경험이 누구에게나 한 번쯤은 있을 것이다. 그리고 이러한 선택들이 모여 지금 우리가 당연하게 여기고 있는 것들을 만들어냈다.

예를 들면, 여성 인권과 투표권이 그렇다. 

여성의 권리 신장과 사회적 인식 변화를 위해, 김마리아와 같은 한국 여성 운동가들은 사회적 제약과 억압을 감수하면서도 자신의 목소리를 내는 선택을 했다.

역사에 이름이 남지 않은 수많은 여성들 역시 같은 선택을 했고, 그러한 선택들이 쌓여 지금 우리가 당연하게 누리는 권리로 이어진 것이다. 

우리는 그들이 어떤 선택을 했는지, 그리고 그 선택이 어떤 결과를 만들었는지를 기억할 필요가 있다.

최근 일어난 에브리타임 앱 상황도 이와 다르지 않다. 

에브리타임 앱은 같은 대학교 학생들끼리 익명으로 자유롭게 소통할 수 있는 앱이다. 에브리타임 게시판 규칙에 대한 의견이 크게 갈렸다. 코르셋.이성애 연애 전시 금지, 텍울과 애기어 금지와 같은 규칙을 두고 다양한 생각이 존재했다. 어떤 사람은 “이유가 있겠지.” 하고 넘어갈 수 있고, 또 다른 사람은 “내가 내 마음대로 표현하는데 뭐가 문제지?” 라고 생각할 수도 있다. 이러한 생각 자체가 틀렸다는 것이 아니다.

다만 그 생각에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 볼 필요가 있다. 왜 이런 규칙이 생겼는지, 어떤 상황에서 어떤 선택들이 모여 이런 결론에 이르렀는지를 생각해보자는 것이다.

나 또한 처음에는 이러한 규칙들에 쉽게 공감하지 못했다. 그러나, 그 배경과 당시의 상황을 이해하게 되면서 그 선택이 최선이었을 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었다. 지금 우리가 에타에서 비교적 건강한 질문과 대화를 나눌 수 있는 환경 역시 그러한 선택들이 쌓인 결과일지도 모른다. 

결국 사람의 인생 또한 수많은 선택들이 모여 만들어진다. 그리고 우리가 살아가는 사회 역시 마찬가지다. 지금 존재하는 제도와 규칙들 또한 누군가의 고민과 선택이 축적된 결과이다.

앞으로 우리는 불평하기에 앞서, 그러한 제도와 규칙이 어떤 배경에서 만들어졌는지 한번쯤 생각해볼 필요가 있다. 그 당시에는 그 선택이 최선이었을지도 모른다는 가능성을 열어두는 것이다. 그리고 그러한 선택들이 모여 지금 우리가 누리는 것들이 만들어졌다는 사실 또한 잊지 말아야 할 것이다.
