Shamanic ritual music chosen by KMA

This year, the Korean Music Awards (KMA) made a historic decision by awarding the best album of the year to Underneath the Lake (소수민족) by Chudahye Chagis. The Korean music awards is the only music Awards in Korea that selects winners based on musical quality and artistic value instead of commercial success or popularity. 

To understand the music of Chudahye Chagis, you must understand the spiritual foundation of their music that is called Pudasi. So what is Pudasi? Pudasi is a specific type of shamanic ritual music that originated from Jeju Island performed during a Gut that — the local name for a shamanic ceremony.  In the past, people believed that they could treat patients by using Pudasi to drive away evil spirits or bad energy. 

Why did KMA select Shamanic music for this award? The core identity of the Chudahye Chagis is based on combining Pudasi with the powerful and rhythmic style of 1970s Bronx hip hop which was created by black communities facing difficult social conditions in New York. This unexpected collaboration of cultures has not only redefined the boundaries of R&B but also developed the traditional heritage. Jang Junyoung, a member of the selection committee said “among the major albums of the year, Underneath the Lake is an exceptional work that could only be produced in Korea”. This means that Chudahye Chagis successfully transformed Pudasi which is often regarded as an old tradition only found in museums, into a form of modern art. 

Next, I would like to recommend these three songs to our readers. First is Hesse by Chudahye Chagis, second is Ritual Dance by Chudahye Chagis and last is Saetaryeong by Leenalchi. Hesse creates a psychedelic atmosphere with fast guitar strokes that build tension and adds vocals based on Pudasi. These unique elements blend well together and give the impression that they are becoming a new genre. Ritual Dance features a dynamic bass progression that leads the song while the vocals of Chudahye blend in like a high pitched instrument. Leenalchi is a group famous for the song Tiger is Coming and Saetaryeong is a track from the drama Jeongnyeoni. This song is impressive because it uses electronic music and human voices to create sound effects like birds chirping and it has a very tense bass. Since all three songs add modern arrangements to traditional folk rhythms you can enjoy them more if you pay attention to those specific elements.

올해 한국대중음악상(KMA)은 추다혜차지스의 소수민족에 '올해의 음반'이라는 상을 수여하며 역사적인 결정을 내렸습니다. 한국대중음악상(한대음)은 상업적 성공이나 인기 대신 오로지 음악적 질과 예술적 가치를 기준으로 수상자를 선정하는 한국 내 유일한 음악 시상식입니다.

추다혜차지스의 음악을 이해하기 위해서는 그들 음악의 영적 토대인 푸다시를 알아야 합니다. 그렇다면 푸다시란 무엇일까요? 푸다시는 제주의 무속 의례인 굿에서 연주되는 특정한 형태의 무가입니다. 과거 사람들은 푸다시를 통해 질병의 원인이 되는 나쁜 기운이나 잡귀를 쫓아냄으로써 환자를 치료할 수 있다고 믿었습니다.

왜 한국대중음악상(KMA)은 무속 음악을 이 상의 주인공으로 선택했을까요? 추다혜차지스의 핵심 정체성은 푸다시를 1970년대 뉴욕의 어려운 사회적 환경에 처해 있던 흑인 공동체가 만든 파워풀하고 리드미컬한 브롱크스 힙합 스타일과 결합하는 데 있습니다. 이러한 예상치 못한 문화 간의 협업은 알앤비(R&B)의 경계를 재정의했을 뿐만 아니라 전통 유산을 한 단계 발전시켰습니다. 장준영 선정위원은 한 해를 대표하는 주요 음반들 사이에서 소수민족은 오직 한국에서만 만들어질 수 있는 독보적인 작품이다라고 평했습니다. 이는 추다혜차지스가 흔히 박물관에서나 볼 수 있는 오래된 전통으로 여겨지던 푸다시를 현대적인 예술의 형태로 성공적으로 탈바꿈시켰음을 의미합니다.
