This shift is called “muhaeryuk” — a term referring to a “power of harmlessness” — and it reflects a growing desire for warmth and safety over aggression and spectacle. Characters like Cinnamoroll and Kakao Friends’ Ryan have come to symbolize this trend, captivating people with their soft appearances and gentle personalities. Against the backdrop of economic uncertainty, rising youth unemployment, and alarmingly high suicide rates, it is no surprise that people now seek comfort and emotional refuge in these quiet, soothing spaces.

More than a passing trend, muhaeryuk captures a deeper emotional shift within younger generations. Amid economic struggles, academic pressures, and an unpredictable future, Millennials and Gen Z have started looking inward. Social media platforms are increasingly filled with moments that highlight simplicity and tranquility — a quiet morning walk, a warm cup of coffee, or the beauty found in moments of stillness. In doing so, this trend moves away from an era of conspicuous self-presentation and embraces a slower, softer approach to life.

This shift has also influenced consumer culture and urban design. Brands now emphasize warmth, comfort, and emotional resonance, while cafés and stores invite patrons to relax, slow down, and find refuge in cozy spaces. Cities too are responding, introducing more green spaces and communal areas that offer moments of rest and reflection for the public.

But as the trend grows, it comes with its own questions. Will “harmless charm” itself become another performance — another standard that people feel pressure to measure themselves against? Might it evolve into a new kind of social currency, diluting its original purpose of providing comfort and belonging? These questions invite reflection on the nature of the trend and its role in reshaping the society that embraces it.

빠름과 성과의 나라에서, 이제는 ‘무해력’의 시대

수년간 한국 사회는 빠른 속도, 높은 성과, 가시적인 결과 중심의 문화로 정의되어 왔다. 그러나 오늘날, 조용한 변화가 이 문화 지형을 바꾸고 있다. 이 변화의 이름은 바로 ‘무해력’ — 해를 끼치지 않는 힘, 즉 부드럽고 안전한 존재감이다. 이 개념은 공격성과 화려함보다 따뜻함과 안정을 추구하는 새로운 감성을 대변한다. 귀여운 외모와 온화한 성격으로 사랑받는 시나모롤(Cinnamoroll), 카카오프렌즈의 라이언(Ryan) 같은 캐릭터들이 이 흐름을 상징하며 많은 이들의 마음을 사로잡고 있다.
경제 불안, 청년 실업 증가, 그리고 높은 자살률이라는 시대적 배경 속에서, 사람들의 마음이 위로와 정서적 안식처를 찾고 있는 것은 어쩌면 당연한 일이다.

이 변화는 소비 문화와 도시 디자인에도 영향을 미치고 있다. 브랜드들은 ‘따뜻함’, ‘편안함’, ‘감정적 울림’을 강조하고, 카페와 상점들은 방문객들에게 휴식과 느긋함을 제공하는 공간이 되기를 지향한다. 도시 역시 이에 응답하며, 녹지 공간과 공공 쉼터를 늘려 시민들이 머물고 숨 쉴 수 있는 여유를 마련하려 한다.

하지만 이 무해력의 흐름도 몇 가지 질문을 던진다. ‘해롭지 않음의 매력’ 또한 또 하나의 ‘연기’나 기준이 되어, 결국 사람들에게 또 다른 부담으로 작용하는 것은 아닐까? 혹시 이 역시 새로운 사회적 자본으로 기능하면서, 본래 가졌던 위로와 소속감이라는 가치를 희석시키고 있는 것은 아닐까?

이 질문들은 이 트렌드의 본질과 그것이 사회에 미치는 영향을 성찰하게 만든다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 늘 빠름과 성과로만 가득했던 문화 속에서 무해력은 중요한 균형점을 제공한다. 잠시 멈추고, 쉬고, 자기 자신을 다시 마주할 수 있는 공간 — 그것이 무해력이 빛나는 자리다. 모든 것을 끊임없이 요구받는 시대에, 조용하고 단순한 순간 속에서도 삶의 아름다움이 존재한다는 사실을 이 흐름은 일깨워준다.

때로는, 잠깐 숨을 고르고 나 자신을 위한 공간을 내어주는 것이야말로 다시 앞으로 나아갈 수 있는 진짜 힘이 되어준다.
그리고 바로 그 자리에서, 무해력의 조용한 아름다움은 가장 밝게 빛난다.
