Another Bittersweet Start

To kickoff 2020, Bong Joon Ho, the director of the movie ‘Parasite’, won four Oscars, taking the glory of the first non-English speaking film to win the Best Pictures. On the International Women’s Day, March 8th, a women-led political party will be officially established, owing to the eight thousand women who gathered for the foundation of this feminist political party.

At the same time, schools are delaying courses and companies decided to work from home. Each morning, we are delivered reports of the mounting number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 and changes in the death toll. The price of facemasks skyrocketed, and factories halted productions of daily necessities, making it ever more challenging to tide over this outbreak of Covid-19. Despite the government’s rapid measures to this pandemic, we can do nothing but uneasily wait for this tragic situation to end. Following everyday preventive actions is essential to avert the further spread of the virus. Unreliable data is overwhelming the internet, yet, we must pay close attention to avoid being fooled by false information.

Various events that were planned along the start of the semester, such as the freshmen orientation, have been postponed. Those who were preparing such events must feel futile just as much as the freshmen who were anticipating their new university lives. Still, English playwriter T.S. Eliot said, “Every moment is a fresh beginning.” An estimated two weeks of classes will be provided through online courses, and the initial excitement of university spirit might dwindle away, but the campus, which will be full of bloomed flowers at that time, will greet us as ever. With health at the forefront of our minds, this spare time would be opportune to work on failed vacations goals and new year resolutions again.

The Sungshin Mirror prepared various articles that might benefit our readers in every way. Along with the interview of the new General Student Council, articles regarding global, cultural trends are ready to provide new perspectives of the world. The story of former national figure skater Lee Hojung is ready in the Cover Story, and advice from Sungshin alumni Park Hyunjoo is prepared for students who are eager to learn about oversea jobhunting.

In my capacity as the new Editor-in-Chief of the Sungshin Mirror, I would like to address my sincere gratitude to those who have shown keen interest to our work of 2019. Again, the Mirror will do our utmost to gear up ourselves and share more adventurous contents. The Sungshin Mirror encourages every enchanted ‘start’ of the Sungshin family. Despite the inevitably postponed semester, we enthusiastically hail everyone with open arms.
