St. Xavier’s College Sister Lee Visits Sungshin Women’s University to Discuss Future Cooperation
Sr. Sophia Lee from St. Xavier’s College, Nepal, visited Sungshin Women’s University on June 5, 2025, to explore potential academic cooperation and student exchange opportunities. The meeting was held at the conference room on the main building of Sungshin University and was attended by the Dean of Office of International and External Affairs Hyungmin Lee, Manager Il Kim, and Coordinator Jongmin Lee from the International Affairs and Services Team.
Sr. Sophia Lee, a member of the Jesuit religious order and a long-standing student counselor at St. Xavier’s College, met with officials from Sungshin Women’s University to introduce her institution and discuss mutual areas of interest. St. Xavier’s College is a prestigious high school in Nepal, primarily serving students in grades 11 and 12. The school has a high proportion of science-major students, many of whom are actively preparing for overseas studies, particularly in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.
The two institutions exchanged institutional overviews and discussed relevant government policies, including scholarship programs and support for long-term stay and settlement for international students in Korea.
Sr. Sophia highlighted a growing preference among Nepalese students for studying in Korea over Japan, citing advantages in affordability and the feasibility of combining work and study. However, she also pointed out ongoing challenges with the EPS (Employment Permit System) due to visa limitations and test difficulty, which is driving increased interest in studying abroad.
St. Xavier’s College proposed hosting an admissions session by Sungshin Women’s University in Nepal during the latter half of the year, suggesting that an in-person session would have the greatest impact. The possibility of such a visit will be coordinated based on future travel plans. Additionally, a short-term exchange program targeting high school students during school breaks was proposed as a means to boost early interest through firsthand campus experience.
The discussion included a briefing on the GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) programs. Sr. Sophia was asked to recommend qualified students from her institution.
